Newlywed Decorating

When we were driving back from Canada, somehow the topic of decorating the homes of newly married couples came up. I began sharing some of the activities that we used to engage in while couples were gone on their honeymoons. The reactions were quite varied according to the age of the listener.

It was tradition back home to decorate the home of the newlyweds while they were gone. By decorate, I don't mean pictures on the wall. We were mean. I was reminded that this wasn't following the Golden Rule. There was a new rule for these activities, however. "Do unto others because you know it is going to be done unto you."

Some of the decorating ideas that I remember were:
1. Fill bathtub with balloons. Make the bottom layer water balloons. The popper will appreciate the shower.
2. Replace soap with Karo Syrup. That antibacterial stuff doesn't clean your hands anyway.
3. Tape the handle of the sprayer at the kitchen sink. Another shower.
4. Remove the labels on cans in the pantry. Replace them with different labels. "Honey, dinner is going to be a surprise again tonight!"
5. Scatter poker chips all over the carpet. The bending and stretching as they pick up each chip will make them appreciate your mad decorating skills.

There were many, many more ways in which we contributed to newlywed bliss. Confetti on fan blades, short-sheeting the bed, basting closed the holes on clothes, etc.

Is anyone still wondering why I moved out of state?

  2. See, and I fell for the idea that you were talking about decorating your new home as newlyweds, not the decorating your friends and family do as a "gift" while you're away. Whew! I'm glad we lived out of state!! :-)
